Brantley outscores Providence Christian, 49-28
Derek Holley is stopped by a nest of Eagles October 12, 2007: The Brantley Bulldogs chalked up their sixth win of the season against only one lost Friday night by outscoring the Providence Christian Eagles, 49-28 in a Region 2 battle for first place held at the Eagles home field in Dothan. The win was Brantley's 40th consecutive Region 2 win as the Bulldogs have not lost a region game since 2001. Both teams entered the game with identical 5-1 records, and it appeared that the Bulldogs might be facing a 'curse of bad luck' when on the opening kickoff the ball was fumbled and recovered by the Eagles on Brantley's 33 yard line. It only took 5 plays before Providence scored a touchdown from the one yard line and the kick made it 7-0 with 8:23 to go in the first period. The Dogs tried to come back and started a good drive only to have a 10 yard holding penalty back them up on the Eagles 35 yard line. Facing 3rd down and 21 yards for a first down, Chase Hall had his passed intercepted for the Bulldogs second turnover in the first period. However; the Eagles could not move the ball and gave it back to the Dogs on the 40 yard line. With 2:46 showing on the clock, Anthony Gulley took the pitch and simply raced 60 yards for the score. Britt Barnes kicked the extra point for a 7-7 score. Providence responded in the second period on a long time consuming drive and that ended on a 1 yard run for the Eagles second touchdown. Brantley answered immediately when Gulley added his 2nd touchdown of the night on a 5 yard run with 7:22 seconds to go in the first half. The point was blocked, and the Eagles had a 14-13 lead. Then after a defense stand, the Bulldogs took over on Providence's 44 yard line. On the second play of the drive Roy-L Knighten, playing outstanding all season, took the handoff and sprinted 35 yards for another Bulldog score. Gulley found Tory Upshaw in the endzone on the 2 point conversion, and Brantley led 21-14 with only 2:24 left in first half. Providence answered with their own touchdown on their next possession on a 42 yard touchdown pass play at the 2:24 mark. The extra point made it 21-21. Brantley's explosive offense was not through when with 1:25 left to play before intermission, Chase Hall fired a touchdown strike to Roy-L Knighten on a beautiful 48 yard pass play. Barnes kick made it 28-21. The Eagles tried to match Brantley's scoring machine when they attempted a long pass only to have the Bulldogs' Justin Wright step in front of the pass and scamper 76 yards before being tackled on the three yard line. With only :03 seconds on the clock, Hall ran it in from the 3 yard line and the first half ended with Brantley in the lead, 34-21. The second half saw less scoring for both teams but still some exciting offensive play. Midway the third period, Brantley's Derek Holley pounded over the goal line from the one yard line, and Hall passed to Dexter Daniels for the 2 point conversion. Brantley seemed to pull away at this point with a 42-21 lead. Providence did manage to score another touchdown in the 4th quarter on a 2 yard run, but Brantley answered with a 4 yard run by Gulley with 8:12 to go in the game to make the final score, 49-28. Roy-L Knighten was the big play maker tonight for the Bulldogs as he had an incredible 132 yards on only 4 carries. He had a touchdown run of 35 yards and caught a touchdown pass of 48 yards. Anthony Gulley once again had a banner night for Brantley with 178 yards on 13 carries and 3 touchdowns. Chase Hall was 3 of 7 passing for 65 yards, one touchdown, and one interception; plus he added a touchdown on a 3 yard run. Brantley has little time to relax as next week they travel to Florala,6 -1, for another Region 2 must game for the Bulldogs.
