Local Issues

Many issues affect animal welfare in Covington County. Some of those issues include the homeless pet population, dog fighting, proper vaccinations and reporting animal abuse.

PET POPULATION: You can do your part to control the pet population in our area by simply having your pet spayed or neutered. Your local veterinarian can perform this easy affordable procedure that not only helps reduce the pet population, but can actually help your pet to live a longer healthier life. Thousands of dogs and cats are put to death right here at the local shelter each year because there are too many animals and not enough homes. Spaying or neutering your pet can significantly reduce the number of animals that are killed each year simply because they were homeless.

DOG FIGHTING:
It is hard to believe there are people out there who revel in the suffering and abuse of animals. But unfortunately, they do exist and they're right here in Covington County. Animals who are forced to participate in this detestable activity are victims of a torturous crime that too often gets swept under the rug by authorities. If you can provide information regarding local dog fighting rings, please report these heinous activities.

PROPER VACCINATIONS
: Puppies and kittens need to receive the proper vaccinations during the early weeks of their lives to enjoy a healthy life. Contact a local veterinarian for more information.

REPORTING ANIMAL ABUSE: If you witness animal abuse or neglect, please contact the local law enforcement authorities or animal control personnel. Animal abuse is a crime punishable by law which may include fees and imprisonment. Depending on the severity of the crime, a suspect may be charge with a misdemeanor or felony. The AAHS has no legal authority to conduct investigations or resolve these situations. However, we can provide refuge for animals rescued from these situations.
